Acupuncture is a gentle treatment for children

Acupuncture is a wonderfully gentle and effective treatment for many childhood issues. As a father myself I know that giving children drugs or submitting them for medical procedures can be an unwelcome so the chance to use a natural and completely safe form of medicine can be a welcome alternative, this is of course particularly true for babies and children.

I have a particular passion for treating children with Acupuncture because of the profound, positive and rapid impact it can have on their lives and have completed additional Paediatric Acupuncture specialist training with Julian Scott. Julian is a world renowned specialist Paediatric Acupuncturist with over 40 years experience.

Children and babies generally respond quicker than adults to Acupuncture treatment so often change can happen quickly and with a minimum of treatment. Unless you request otherwise I always use the approach of using the minimum treatment necessary to get the results required, this is part of being gentle and sensitive to your child’s needs.

Will my child be scared?

Before any treatment happens, my first priority is to establish a secure relationship with children so that they feel comfortable in the treatment room and feel comfortable with me. When children feel cared for and respected they are relaxed and happy and most are accepting of all forms of treatment including needles. Some older children actually think it is quite ‘cool’ having acupuncture needles poking out of them and want to bring, or take photos for, their friends to see! It is also really important to know that needles are often not the first choice of treatment, especially with children, who can respond very well to Tui Na (Chinese massage) and other forms of treatment; sometimes it is also possible to teach carers simple to learn techniques that allow for treatment to be continued at home, none of which involves needles.
